The spring solstice is right around the corner!
March 20th to be exact. I love spring because it represents a season of new growth and self-improvement. It’s a chance to start anew and finally take action and learn how to break bad habits.
Spring is a time when the sun stays out a little longer, the temperatures begin to rise, and it just feels so good to declutter both your home and your mind. Spring cleaning exists for a reason. One of my favorite ways to celebrate the new season is to “spring clean” my mindset, by learning how to break bad habits and making small but significant lifestyle changes to my lifetyle routine.
You’re here because probably wondering how to break bad habits yourself. The first step in learning how to break bad habits and spring clean your lifestyle is to recognize that we’ve all got some wacko habits. While we are all QUEENS (I mean duh), even queens can identify places that need more nurturing. Just like the symbolism behind the season of spring, we all have the opportunity to grow larger and root deeper.
In this post, I’ll be offering some insight into learning how to break bad habits, along with some sample bad habits for you to focus on this spring.
How to Break Bad Habits – 14 Sample Habits for You to Break this Spring:
Quit Pressing the Snooze Button –
First of all, I’m 10000% guilty of this…like I’m an avid snooze button user. I’ll set my alarm an hour early to press snooze 9 times before I actually need to get up.
While we feel that the snooze button gives up that mental warning that we need to get up soon, it really holds no purpose. In fact, I’d even say it makes our sleep cycles super irregular, making us feel more groggy in the morning.
So how do we make the change? We can all start by setting the alarm to the last possible moment to get up and get active. When we leave no leeway, we are forced to get up and start adulting as soon as that first (and last) alarm goes off.
The hardest part of getting out of bed in the morning is literally getting out of bed. Try moving your phone or alarm clock across the room. Once you’re up you just need to willpower to not jump back into bed. I believe in you, friends!
Not Getting Enough Sleep –
I say this as I’m falling asleep on my [train] commute to work. Our lifestyles are so active and unpredictable that we often forget that sleep is a key ingredient for our immune system to stay strong. If you’re one of those people who can function on 3 hours of sleep, kudos. I need at least more than 6, or I will be unable to function the following day.
I have found that the best way to get to bed earlier in the evening is to steer clear of television. It’s SO easy to get caught up in eps on eps of your favorite shows, that by the time you check the clock it’s already 1 AM, and you need to get up in 5 hours.
Unless you’re living a bougie lifestyle and can get more than 8 hours of sleep a night (jelllyyy), you’d be surprised how easy it is to fall asleep in a controlled, dark and quiet environment. Reading tends to put me to sleep as well.
Binge Eating/Drinking –
When examining how to break bad habits, the easiest ones are the ones you don’t even realize are bad for you.
You know when you eat like absolute shit, and it tastes so good but then you feel all gross after? What about when you go out to a bar with your friends and you wake up the next morning feeling like death slapped you in the face?
That’s definitely me, usually caused by Chick-Fil-A or my inability to end the party.
It’s time to learn how to break bad habits, whether that be binging on crappy processed food, or having one too many glasses of wine while watching The Bachelor. Not only because bikini season is coming up, but because our bodies are vehicles for our souls. We want to get the most out of them and out of life, so we need to spring clean our binging tendencies.
One way you can fix this is by finding alternatives that are much healthier for you. Pinterest is LOADED with healthy food recipes that actually look amazing. Not to mention, a lot of them are chocolatey and delicious.
As for boozin, set some ground rules for yourself. I am trying a thing where I only drink on the weekends. This excludes excessively stressful days, and/or days of celebrations. Keep track of how much you drink and know your limits. Consider marking down how much you drink in a low key way, maybe on your hand, or in a note in your phone.
Going Grocery Shopping on an Empty Stomach—
So far I’ve been guilty of doing all these things. It’s a deadly mistake…and by deadly I mean bad for your wallet AND your bod.
You ever walk into a grocery store looking for three things and walk out with an entire cart? It’s usually because you’re hungry af.
EAT BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING. Your finances will appreciate the gesture. Not to mention, the amount of food waste per person is crazy high. Seriously though, around 30-40% of all our food is wasted and ending up in landfills. Going shopping on an empty stomach has got to be an indirect cause of that.
Not Making Time to Workout –
Guys, I totally feel you on this one. Finding time to work out is actually so challenging. I commute to work four hours each weekday, but I also don’t have any spawn to look after. Whatever your reasoning may be, finding time to get active can be pretty challenging.
However, working out is so important. Our overall health and wellness depend a lot on it. Studies have been shown that exercising works just as effectively as anti-anxiety meds. Maybe it’s times when we DON’T have enough time to workout that we actually need it the most!
If you’re going to be watching TV, you might as well be walking while you do it. You can stream pretty much anything at this point on your phone or tablet, so get walking and start watching. Your health depends on it!
Overloading the Caffeine Consumption –
Don’t get me wrong, I love coffee as much as the next person, but overloading the caffeine consumption isn’t good for our health. Especially if it’s artificial and loaded with all the sugaaa.
This spring, try tracking and monitoring your caffeine intake. Limit yourself to one or two cups of coffee a day. Also, consider looking for alternatives. If you live that tea life, green tea is a great alternative to a cup o’ joe.
Likewise, keep it simple. Getting all those fancy drinks from your local coffee shop or Starbucks just adds a ton of calories and sugar. Ask for half as much cream and sugar as the norm. Coming from a girl who NEEDS cream and sugar to drink coffee, it’s still amazing (and drinkable lol).

Not Taking off Makeup/Brushing Teeth/Flossing Before Bed –
Yeah, I’m disgusting and super bad at this. Don’t judge me!!! Going to bed with clear skin and clean teeth is an amazing feeling and an awesome habit to get going. Not only is it better for you, but you wake up feeling fresher as well.
Flossing will be the downfall of mankind…but it doesn’t have to be. Oldschool flossing strategies are out. They have those premade flossers that are super easy and convenient to use. We’ve got no excuses and need to learn how to break bad habits…especially when they affect our health!
People, people, people. If you haven’t invested in a WaterPik you NEED TO! It’s the greatest flossing invention ever created. Rather than the pain of shoving flossers into your gums, it shoots water at a high pressure, getting rid of all the plaque and gross crap you have stuck in your teeth. The first time I used it, after brushing my teeth no less, I was SHOCKED to see how much was cleared out of my gums and teeth. It’s incredible, and your mouth feels great after you use it.
Not Scheduling Doctors’ Appointments –
Friends…we’re getting old. Okay, I’m only 24, but still. It’s important to get yourself to the doctor’s office for your yearly exams. Whether it’s for your teeth or your cooch, it’s important to monitor what’s going on with your body.
Unfortunately, we can’t be as young and carefree as our tween and teen years, so let’s start using our health insurances and dental plans to our advantage here.
Not Putting on Sunscreen –
*BREAKING NEWS* Too much sun exposure isn’t good for our skin.
This obviously isn’t breaking news. Nonetheless, we remain relatively lax about putting on sunscreen. Luckily, they’ve got better with sunscreen application methods, making it much easier and hassle-free to spray on a quick coat of sunscreen.
Addiction to Social Media/Electronics –
If you’re looking at the hardest habit to break in your ‘how to break bad habits’ search…this one probably takes the cake. I mean it’s hard not to be addicted to social media at this point. We find out all the news and gossip, we stay connected with friends and family, and we are able to get inspired by other people’s posts and ideas.
However, there is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. We’ve had too much when we start to feel like crap about ourselves, and what we’re doing with our lives. It’s so easy to get caught up in the façade/mask that social media gives us.
When we realize social media is making us feel down and depressed, that’s your cue to take a social media detox. Take initiative and delete an app or suspend an account until you feel better. I have had my cousin go on my Facebook and change my password so I wouldn’t have access to it. Do whatever you feel is comfortable, and stay mindful of the non-social media world around you that still exists.

Okay, I’m SO guilty of this one…dare I say I’m a popaholic. But 9/10 times I’ll regret picking and popping my zits and ingrown hairs. While it’s super satisfying (yeah I’m gross I know), the scars and scabs that remain post-pop are way worse than an initial pimple.
Once I notice or feel a zit coming in, I get fixated on its presence. My advice would be to try and distract yourself with other hands-on activities so you stop playing with your pimple. If anything, get your satisfaction by watching Dr. Pimple Popper on Youtube / Instagram 😉.
If you got those zit scars, try out a product that works to lighten the spot left behind.
Overspending on Things You Don’t Need –
Unless you are in desperate need for #200 in your pair of shoes (and wear the other 199) think twice before spending your cash. Prioritize your spending so you learn to save at least a few dollars here and there.
Maybe if you eat out at work 5 days a week, change things up and meal prep for the week ahead. Considering you spend at least $7 per weekday meal, you’d end up saving $35 dollars a week = $140 a month = $1680 a year…that shit adds up!
Together we can learn how to break bad habits…slowly but surely!
Being Petty and Holding Grudges –
Don’t be petty and don’t hold grudges. It’s easier said than done…but when you take a step back and view negative emotions such as pettiness or holding onto grudges, you’re only bringing down your own vibe.
When I’m in a bitchy mood, I ask myself a series of very simple, but very effective questions:
Will this matter in 5 minutes? 5 months? 5 years?
If the answer is no, you’ve got to be strong and let that shit go sistas. We’ve only got a limited time on this earth—don’t allow negativity to control you.
Not Living in the Moment –
To tie everything all together, we need to focus on being mindful and staying in the present moment.
We need to stop asking ourselves the dreaded “what if” question. “What if I had turned left instead of right?” or “What if I don’t get this position I interview for?” They speculate about our past, or get us stressed about things that haven’t happened (and might never happen).
Don’t get me wrong people, as an anxiety sufferer myself, I know it’s not something that you can automatically switch off in your mind…if that were the case, mental illness wouldn’t exist. But we can take baby steps in the right direction, by becoming mindful of our thoughts. How to break bad habits starts by recognizing your negative thoughts, and simply letting them pass without judgment.
